Wrote my people and this was the response.
Thank you for contacting me in regards to gun safety. I encourage you to continue being active in your community.

As we are still dealing with the devastating effects of the shooting at MSU that took place on February 13, 2023, we are reminded of the dangers that can occur when guns get in the hands of those who are unfit. It is a wakeup call to the legislators of Michigan to do more to protect not only our children, but also our beautiful Great Lake state.

One of the key legislations being introduced is that universal background checks (Senate Bills 76, 77, and 78). Backgrounds checks are a foundational gun safety policy that has broad support, even among gun owners. Michigan law requires the buyer of a handgun to either have a handgun purchase license, a license to carry a concealed handgun, or to have undergone a background check through a federally funded license dealer. The state does not require a background check for the sale or transfer of a long gun from an unlicensed seller; so closing background check loopholes helps ensure that individuals purchasing weapons are legally eligible to do so.

Red Flag Laws or Extreme Risk Protection Orders (SB 83, 84 (Polehanki), 85, 86). These laws establish a court process for keeping guns out of the hands of those who pose a serious threat to themselves or others. Last June, Congress enacted and President Biden signed the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act (BSCA). Among other things, this law provides $750 million in funding to states to implement state crisis intervention programs, including extreme risk laws.

Safe Storage (SB 79, 80, 81, 82). Michigan does not require firearms owners to lock their weapons in safes, or require unattended firearms to be stored in a certain way to prevent unauthorized access by children or others. Safe storage laws help prevent unsafe or unlawful access to firearms.

I am a strong advocate for the safety of our students at MSU, but also students everywhere in Michigan.

Thank you once again for contacting my office. I appreciate your feedback and I hope you will continue to stay involved in the legislative process and encourage you to reach out to me should I ever be of service to you in the future.

    Sincerely,

    Dayna Polehanki
